Easy Homemade Applesauce Recipe
Equipment
- 1 Saucepan
- 1 Spatula
- 1 Blender or food processor (optional, for smoother texture)
Ingredients
- 4 pounds apples peeled, cored, and chopped
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- ⅓ cup water
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Pinch of sea salt
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice all apples.
- Pour 1 1/2 cups water and 2 Tbsp sugar into a large stockpot. Heat over medium and boil to dissolve sugar. Add all the sliced apples, decrease heat to low, cover with lid, and simmer for 1 hour, stirring regularly.
- Pour water over apples in a big pot. The water will soften the apples by steaming and simmering.
- Simmer the apples over medium-low heat for 15 minutes, stirring regularly, until very mushy and breaking up.
- Mash applesauce. Blend the apples until smooth to form a puree. Use a fork, potato masher, or immersion blender to lightly crush apples for chunky applesauce.
- Before refrigerating or freezing, let it cool to room temperature.
Notes
- Storage: Keep homemade applesauce in an airtight jar in the fridge. Refrigerated, it lasts 7–10 days. Long-term storage is possible by freezing.
- Freezing: Divide applesauce evenly into three straight-sided wide-mouth canning jars. Dated jars. Cool in the fridge. Cover and freeze jars. Can freeze for 6 months.

How Long Does Homemade Apple Sauce Last?
Applesauce can be stored or canned and refrigerated for a week to ten days. Mott’s applesauce should be used within 10 days of opening. Let me introduce our panel.
Why Applesauce Is so Watery?
Sometimes we accidentally add too much water to our recipe, or the apples produce more juice than anticipated which leaves us with watery applesauce. Luckily, it is so easy to thicken homemade applesauce. We just need to cook it longer to help the water evaporate.
