– 1 Blender – 1 Shaker – 1 Glass
– 4 cups whole milk – 1 cup heavy cream – 6 large eggs – 3/4 cup granulated sugar – 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg – Optional: 3/4 cup dark rum bourbon, or brandy (for spiked eggnog) – Additional nutmeg for garnish
1. In a large saucepan, heat the whole milk and heavy cream over medium heat until it reaches a gentle simmer. 2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and granulated sugar. 3. Slowly pour a small amount of the hot milk mixture into the bowl with the eggs and sugar.
4. Gradually pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining hot milk mixture, whisking constantly to combine. 5. Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Do not let it boil.
6. Remove the eggnog from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and ground nutmeg. 7. Before serving, stir the eggnog well to reincorporate any separated ingredients. Pour into glasses or mugs and garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg. Enjoy chilled.
