Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
Cream together the shortening, brown sugar, and 1/2 cup of white sugar in a large mixing bowl.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then mix in the vanilla extract.
Combine the flour, baking soda, and salt in another bowl.
Gradually blend this mixture into the creamed ingredients.
Fold in the chocolate chips and set the dough aside.
In a separate bowl, combine the cream cheese with the remaining 1/4 cup of white sugar.
Mix in the two remaining eggs until smooth.
Spread half of the chocolate chip dough evenly in the prepared pan.
Pour the cream cheese mixture over the dough layer.
Sprinkle with pecans, then drop spoonfuls of the remaining chocolate chip dough over the cream cheese layer.
It's okay if there are gaps, as the batter will spread while baking.
Bake for 45 minutes or until the top is lightly browned.
Allow the brownies to cool in the pan before cutting into bars.
